TWD: flaky apple turnovers

Photobucket

Does anything say fall like apples and cinnamon? I didn't think so. Well I guess pumpkins, mulled wine, and falling leaves. But apples and cinnamon are right up there. It isn't quite fall here in California. We are still enduring 90º days. Despite the heat I'm a slave when it comes to apples and cinnamon in any sort of crust. I will do whatever the apples and cinnamon tell me to. This week they told me to make flaky apple turnovers.

This was one of those multi-step recipes that aren't exactly hard but have a lot of steps. I made the dough on Saturday morning and put it in the fridge to chill. Saturday night after watching Inglorious Basterds I came home to very chilled dough. Have you ever tried to roll out a brick? Because this is what it was like trying to roll out this dough. I wanted to make the turnovers Sunday morning for Pete and his brother Sam who is visiting. I tried my hardest to roll out my dough by myself but I had to throw in the towel. Pete had to come help me. Pete has huge muscles and even he struggled with rolling out this dough. (Pete is very appreciative of that last sentence). I held the wax paper and Pete rolled. By the time we finished we were winded and sweating. And no we are not horribly out of shape. This was brick dough.

Sunday morning I got up early and put the turnovers together. When I make these again I'll make bigger circles. I wasn't able to get enough filling into each turnover.

I had some blueberries in the fridge so I made a couple of blueberry turnovers. As much as I love apples and cinnamon I love blueberries more. If I had to choose it would be blueberries. Sorry apples.

I had extra dough and had a lot of extra apple so I made the most attractive dessert ever. I give you the giant apple turnover. So classy. A great way to get rid of extra dough and apples without a lot of work. This is the lazy way to make apple turnovers.

Pete and I went to see the Giants/Dodgers game on Sunday afternoon with our friends, including Erin from Dog is My Sous Chef.  Here Erin and I are enjoying the Giants, hot dogs, and Budlight.

This is my second post today. So if it makes no sense don't blame it on me. Blame it on Pete. Seriously, my family blames him for everything. He doesn't even have to be around and my family blames him. Who ate all the peanuts? Pete. Who broke that plate that my sister dropped? Pete. Don't feel bad for Pete. He is fighting back. He now blames my dad for everything. Who drank all the juice? Dad. Who ate the last cupcake? Dad. But Dad hasn't been here for three weeks. Dad still did it. So if my post sucks it's Pete and Dad's fault. But Dad is in Philadelphia. Doesn't matter, still his fault.

Thanks to Julie of Someone's in the Kitchen for picking out this week's recipe. Check out her blog for the recipe. Head over to Tuesday's with Dorie to see what all the the other bakers did. I'm sure there are all sorts of delicious fruit turnovers.

  1. I'm in awe Kim. Not only of your turnovers, but also of your pictures.

If I'm correct, you take them with artificial light? (If not you have a hell of a brightly lit kitchen!!!) ...if so, could you tell me how many watts total?

    I'm floored...

  2. Haha. What a cute post! Oh, and I agree with vibi, if you have any photo secrets you want to share, I'm hanging on every word.
I love all of the turnovers, from the sweet little apple turnovers, to the pretty blueberry filling turnovers, to the ginormous turnover (in fact, that one might edge out the competition and be my very favorite). What a great batch of turnovers!

  4. First of all, GO GIANTS!

Do you live in the Bay Area? I live in San Jose. Are we baking neighbors? If so, we should definitely do a bake date one of these days.

And your apple turnovers look absolutely gorgeous! I love all the photos! I will live vicariously through them since I did not make the pastry dough. ;)

    You are so fantastical!

  6. Cute photo of you and Erin at the ballgame. Oh, yeah, the turnovers...well, they look very very flaky to me and they look very tasty. Blueberry...Ohhhhhhh...now that sounds good, thanks for the idea on that, I can think about making these again much sooner if blueberries are on the ingredient list! Great job.

  15. This dough gave me fits so I'm glad I wasn't the only one who struggled! Looks like your results were much more successful than mine though! Your turnovers are seriously gorgeous! Blueberries were a great idea - send one of those my way, ok? :)

  16. I love your giant turnover. Now, is it my imagination, or are all of your turnovers smiling at the camera?

  17. Good job! They look delicious! For some reason, my dough was not so evil to roll out. Maybe my German grandma passed me down some super strength for rolling! Or my dough was softer... LOL

Your flaky apple turnovers look fantastic! I love all of the photos you took in the process. How in the world did you get the filling in and have them look soo nice after sealing them?? I definitely need to use bigger cutouts next time...
