Pete was at band practice on Sunday (or as my brother likes to call it band camp) and we usually do the grocery shopping together or he does it by himself but I NEVER (I lie probably once every six months I might find myself at the store alone) do it by myself. I hate it. I think it has to do with pushing the cart. Everyone else in the store is in my way. There is no need to park your cart in the center of the aisle and spend 10 minutes gazing at cereal. If you are like me you always pick the same cereal anyway. There is a certain cart etiquette that many people at my local Trader Joe's and Safeway are missing. The worst is when two people that know each other bump into one another at the store and then proceed to have a conversation in the middle of the aisle. It is never okay to block the aisle. It makes me cranky. It's probably a good thing that I don't go by myself. Pete is actually protecting all the innocents by keeping me under control. He calms me. He's a good man. It is pretty much a given that if Pete and I don't go together on the weekend then no grocery shopping is happening. We then live off fat and gristle and other things we can scrounge up in the freezer until Pete makes the trek to the store. (Don't feel bad for him he is unemployed so he has lots of time to do stuff. Right, baby?)
This is all a very long winded way of saying I made do with what I had at home to make this week's milk chocolate mini bundt cakes. I do not own a mini bundt cake pan so I had to improvise and went with the cupcake pan. No milk chocolate in the house so I made these with a mix of bittersweet and semisweet chocolate (all the left over chunks sitting in my baking box). No whole milk in the fridge so I used buttermilk like Dorie suggests in the playing around. I also ran out of energy and did not bother making the glaze for these little cakes. I ended up with semisweet/bittersweet chocolate cupcakes (sort of). These were a bit underwhelming on their own but cupcake + vanilla ice cream + chocolate sauce = yummy. Unfortunately we are now out of vanilla ice cream and still have a lot of little cakes. Pete will have to make a run to the store. We need these basic necessities in the house.
Thanks to Kristin of I'm Right About Everything for picking this week's recipe. Check out her blog for the recipe. These make the best base for an ice cream sundae. You should also check out Tuesdays with Dorie to see what an actual milk chocolate mini bundt cake looks like and how they tasted.
(Wondering why my pictures are kind of lame and there are only two - I waited until 5:30 at night to try and take pictures. Not a good idea. Even with the tripod some were blurry. Almost dark out does not make pretty baking pictures. Maybe some day I will learn to start baking earlier in the day and not wait till 3. )

I love grocery shopping! All the other people in the store I can do without... I didn't try ice cream with mine, but they needed the caramel sauce to be really yummy, I found.
ReplyDeleteOH! Boy... I hear you loud and clear about grocery shopping. Although I don't mind going on my own... people that block the aisles, better fear my wrath! LOL It is always better when I go with Mr Carré who keeps me from looking like an mad women. I'm starting to think that we have much more in common than dogs and plates! LOL
ReplyDeleteBut enough about genii like us... let me praise those deep, rich, beautiful chocolate jewels you made! Very well done Kim!
Very funny about the shopping. I can't stand shopping of any kind. I just like to go, get it, and get out. Mark shops some, he likes to grocery shop as he likes to check out all the potato chip varieties, so I have a nice deal there in that he will go get all the staples and then I just have to fine tune during the week and get things that are a little more confusing to the average male shopper. Your improvisions sound worthy, who's to say that Dorie didn't pick that kind of chocolate because that is what SHE had in the house at the time? I'm just saying...could be. They look great, and my guys would love the sundae idea...stealing that, so thanks.
ReplyDeleteha, I get what I refer to as "cart rage" in grocery stores. And in NYC its even worse...the aisles are tiny and half the people in the supermarket are loony. Always an adventure! the cupcakes look delish! Especially with the ice cream!!!
ReplyDeleteThe photo with ice cream and chocolate sauce is perfection! I wish I had a bowl now.
ReplyDeleteI love grocery shopping. Well, truthfully, I just don't trust anyone else. Though when I broke my leg a couple years ago, my son did fine without me. But he's been trained.
I hate that when people block both sides of the aisle while having a conversation! I makes me grumpy. Bummer that these were underwhelming...glad they were better with ice cream. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat truths here in your post, especially about grocery shopping politeness. Ugh! You know what's worse, when you take a kid or two with you and they INSIST on you letting them get in one of those car carts so they can DRIVE around. Those things are beasts and a pain to lug around. Whew, got that off my chest. Thanks. ;)
ReplyDeleteWay to make do with what you have and come out with ice cream sundaes--perfect deliciousness!
LOL - I need someone like Pete to do my grocery shopping for me, and I agree with your comments on the suprermarket etiquette issue. You cakes look delish - I wasn't so attached to the milk chocolate, so different chocolate would have ben better.
ReplyDeletehere, it's the mothers with the massive strollers who'll run you down in store...not nice. i wish i had another piece of bundt to turn into a sundae!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love grocery shopping, but that's probably because I'm unemployed right now so I have plenty of time. I do agree about the inconsiderate people though. Grocery shopping helps me to be a more patient person and if there's one thing I need more of, it's patience!
ReplyDeleteYour cupcakes look wonderful, especially with the vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. Mine were a bit dense/heavy, wish I'd thought to add some ice cream!
People are strange in the grocery stores..I get so frustrated with the big mamas that block the way for me to get to my baking stuff. I am tired of being polite..i want to bump their carts with my cart..hard! Ok sorry I got carried away!
ReplyDeleteYour cakes look good!
I hate grocery shopping too! Your cakes look great and you're right they really do make a good ice cream base. Thanks for baking with me this week!
ReplyDeleteToo bad they were underwhelming. But I love the idea of having them with ice cream and fudge. YUM
