TWD: parisian apple/apricot/peach/nectarine tartlets

This week's recipe was fabulous and it took barely anytime to make. So nice to be able to whip up a delicious dessert in less than an hour. We took a trip to the local farmer's market to pick up some produce for the tartlets. I decided I would make apple, apricot, peach and nectarine tartlets. So we could have ourselves a little tasting extravaganza. Any ideas of which one of the above fruits was the winner? I'm sure the suspense is just killing you.

The apple tartlet was good. But the husband, Pete, and I both thought it was the least tasty of the bunch.

Second, from the bottom in the taste test was the nectarine. This may have been due to a dud nectarine. A better tasting happier nectarine probably would have been delicious. This is my fault because I picked this poor sad tasteless nectarine out of a giant pile of probably tastier nectarines. Or maybe it is the farmer's fault because he brought lame nectarines to the market.

Third, was the apricot tartlet. Very tasty. The apricot was nice and ripe. I left the skin on because it was so thin but it would probably be prettier without it. It has a nice tart taste that went really well with the brown sugar and puff pastry. But it was not the winner.

The winner in taste was the white peach. It is the loser in looks though. Our mom's were right when they told us looks weren't everything. The peaches tried to make a run for it soon after I put them in the oven. I'm sure they were screaming about how hot it was and to get them the hell out of there. One managed to escape all the way across the cookie sheet. The other three couldn't break free of the puff pastry and instead decided they would mash it all up as payback. The peach was delicious. I have to give thanks to Pete because he picked that one out of the big peach pile.

There are actually two winners. The peach in taste but the tiny bite-size tartlets win the most fun to eat award. I had left over puff pastry and some apple and apricot and didn't want to waste it. These were gone in a couple of minutes.

Here is the whole family enjoying each of the tartlets. The only presentable one is Willa. Charlie was yowling and angry at being forced to participate in a family portrait. Damn teenagers. I couldn't stop laughing at Charlie's attitude and Willa's facial expressions and poor Pete was dodging claws trying to position Charlie in less than 10 seconds. So no great family picture of us all enjoying our tartlets. I tried.

But Willa adored the apricot tartlet. Her face is too much. Pete and I ended up eating the four tartlets for dinner on Saturday night. Nice and healthy. I kept telling myself that I was eating fruit so it had to be healthy. Willa got a treat for being such a good sport. Charlie was grounded.

Thank you Jessica from My Baking Heart for picking out a delicious and easy-peasy recipe this week. Check out her blog for the recipe. Also head on over to TWD to check out all the variations the other bakers did this week. Or you can stay here and stare at Willa's face and smile. Your choice.

  1. Hi Kim! I just love your posts - they're soo fun and entertaining! The fruit lineup is a cute shot. I'm envious of your tartlets too - the puff pastry is really puffy! The apricot tartlet looks really tasty. I'm going to try white peach later so I'll have to make sure they don't try to bust out!
Love, love, love the table shot of your family! How does Willa know to pose like that?

  3. Great post! If my dogs were that close to the human food, it'd be gone before the shutter clicked. Next time I'll try the white peaches. Sounds delicious.

  5. Love all the fruits lined up waiting for the firing squad...LOL. Your tarts are so beautiful...it was fun to hear about the different fruits/results. I am all about the research on things like this. Good idea what to do with those leftover scraps...I gathered them all up and rolled them out into two other tarts...I like your idea very much. How did you get those doggies to do that????

  19. Your assortment of tarts look great, but the dogs have stolen the show. Such cute photos of them at the table. My dog would never sit that still, but he's a Yorkie which probably explains everything.
